Is Lye Dangerous in Soap?

It would be very dangerous to put lye on your skin.  But did you know that in a properly formulated bar of soap there is actually no lye left in the soap?  This is the science part of soap making.  Let me explain.  During the process of making soap, a chemical reaction, called saponification, occurs.  This is when oils and fats are combined with lye and the result is soap and glycerin.  Lye is simply a catalyst to make that reaction occur.

We calculate our lye very carefully to be sure we have the correct amount.  Additionally we practice the art of “superfatting.” This means that we add extra oils and butters beyond what is required for saponification.  These fats will remain in your bar of soap providing you with superior cleansing and moisturizing.
